7 Steps to Renewing Your Mind

Romans 12:2 NIV – Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The Bible tells us that we are not to conform to the pattern of this world; but we are to renew our minds. Renewing our minds allows us to be tested and approved through God’s perfect will in our lives.

I used to hear this scripture and think, “How in the world do I renew my mind? Renew my mind from what?”  But, as I was attacked by the enemy more and more with stinkin thinkin, I began to see why it was important to renew my mind.

The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy.  (John 10:10) He will use whatever he can to reach our weakest point. For me, it’s my mind in thinking that I’m not good enough, or that I’m not smart enough. In my childhood, I had a certain individual that would always tell me that I was stupid, and that I was never going to amount to anything. Those words have stuck with me all my life, and I’m nearly 60 years old!

As I read this scripture, I began to ask God how to renew my mind. Is it through reading the Bible? Yes. Is it through becoming more aware of what my thoughts are? Yes! Does it involve a lot of work to renew my mind? YES!! But, it’s so worth it!

So let’s talk about some ways to renew your mind:

  1. PRAY – The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much! James 5:16 Prayer is so important. It keeps the line of communication between you and God open.  Ask for prayer from others, also. We benefit from sharing with someone else what we are going through.
  2. Read the Word daily! If you don’t read the Word, how will you ever know what God says about you? How will you ever know who God truly is?
  3. Take every thought captive! 2 Corinthians 10:5 says that by taking our thoughts captive, we destroy every proud obstacle that keeps us from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. In other words, every time you have a negative thought about yourself, you need to remind yourself what God’s Word, which is truth, says about you.
  4. Keep standing on the Word! No matter what your thoughts are about yourself, standing on the word of God keeps bringing to mind what GOD says about us, and in time, your thinking WILL turn around!
  5. Put up post-it notes with reminders of what the word of God says about you, everywhere you can see them: the bathroom  mirror, your dashboard, your lunch bag, inside your wallet, on the refrigerator. You need to see the Word in front of you! I call them “Instant Reminders“.
  6. Resist the temptation to believe the lies of the enemy.  (James 4:7) This takes work, and consistency. You have to stay on top of this, no matter how you feel! You may find yourself slipping into negative thoughts, and as soon as you do, take authority over them right then and there! Do not give the enemy a foothold into your thought life! You are a child of God! You are loved and accepted by the Lord of Lords, and King of Kings! You are more than a Conqueror! Remind the enemy of that…every single time!
  7. Find scriptures that deal specifically with your thoughts. For me, I used to deal a lot with guilt and condemnation. So I know when those times hit, I need to focus on scriptures like Romans 8:1, and 1 John 1:9.
  8. Meditate on the Word of God. (Psalms 1:1-3) Think on the things that God says to you through His word. Don’t just read over them. Really meditate on what He is saying to you. Ask the Lord to show you what He means by the word He gives you; to give you revelation knowledge of it.

These are just a few of the steps I take each day. It’s important to me to do my best to stay strong and fight the negative thinking. Does that mean that I don’t ever have negative thoughts about myself? I Wish!! No, it just means that when I do have those negative thoughts, I know how to fight them. Most of my negative thoughts have disappeared, or maybe I should say that they don’t come around as often.

As I said in the beginning, renewing our mind takes work. It takes dedication. It takes consistency in fighting off the lies of the enemy, and standing on the Word of God! You just have to, for your own good! It will be worth it! Whom the Son sets free is free indeed! John 8:36

I hope these suggestions will help you find peace in your hearts and rest for your minds. Negative thinking is one of the biggest tools the enemy uses against us. If we submit to God, stand strong, and resist the enemy, the Word promises that the enemy will flee. James 4:7
